What is a Vertosol?

Vertosol soils are soils with high clay content that crack on the surface when dry, these soils are colloquial called ‘cracking clay soils’. Globally Vertosol soils are most common in Australia, which have a large diversity. These range from desert soils to agricultural soils.

The sub-group classification for Vertosols are based on the primary colour of the soil, while the great group classification is based on soil structure, with the sub-group having the most complex classification due to the diverse range of Vertosol soils in Australia.
